ARC X – Double Jeopardy, An Overview of the 2010 Challenge

The name of the 2010 challenge is Double Jeopardy. The word jeopardy is defined by Webster’s as “a divided game with even chances” and with both the Adventure Challenge and GS Trophy competition at the same event we surely have a “divided game”. In fact, we think it’s actually “double jeopardy”

The term “Double Jeopardy “ applies mostly to our legal system and indicates a person is being tried twice for the same crime. In the American Legal system Double Jeopardy is unconstitutional. But in the “Adventure Court system," Double Jeopardy becomes a Machiavellian tool by which we select the best riders as Team USA for the GS trophy. You will be “tried twice" to see if you have what it takes to make the top 20 Adventure Riders in the USA – and consequently get a shot at Team USA.

The Challenge will be organized with two solid days of competition for those who want to enter the BMW GS Trophy. The competition will be organized as follows.

Day 1: 9am - Noon

The PitThe Renegade Run: The first stage of Double Jeopardy comes with our “Renegade Run Challenge” which in itself has a “double jeopardy”. It will be much like last years “Pit” competition but this years event will consist of teams of three riders wrestling their motorcycles through a ¾ mile long canyon. In the 2009 challenge the Pit was only 666 yards long, this years crevasse is twice as long as last year. There will be a “stop the clock” resting point half way through the challenge with a mandatory 10 minute rest period between stages. After the mandatory break the clock will start again and the competitors will continue on their way. Thus the two elements of the run create your double jeopardy.Riders in the Pit

Day 1: 1:30pm - 5 pm

HP2 in the sandThe Gallows Competition: The consequence of “double jeopardy” usually resulted in a “hanging.” That’s why its been declared unconstitutional in the American legal system – and for sure no one will be hung here at the challenge, however, just for fun and to keep the theme going we are naming our usual “arena style” competition “The Gallows Course.” In whimsical fashion you will find “Gallows” at several locations around the course. Each gallows will have a task associated with it. There will also be the usual mix of hill climbs, descents, whoops, bumps, jumps, hold the line, and other challenges, but at the “gallows” you may have to throw a ball through a noose as you ride by or something like that.

oh, by the way... don’t fear the reaper. Challenge Pics

Rider in the sunDay 2: The GS Trophy Challenge.

On day 2 the GS Trophy Challenge will begin. This will be a very serious competition because the stakes are high. An all expenses paid trip to South Africa for the adventure of a lifetime is the reward. At the end of the day, three talented and lucky people will be selected as “Team USA”.

The top 20 scores of the previous day will be the contenders for the trophy. In this competition there will only be one rider at a time on the course. All riders will compete on identical RawHyde School bikes. The competition will take all day, and the judging will be very serious.
